Gregg Araki’s latest feature is allegedly a return to its roots, a manic, dark comedy commonplace in the style of his early works such as The Doom Generation (1995) and Nowhere (1997). I saw none of these films, and can only compare the new Kaboom Araki last two functions, the skin beautifully sad mystery (2004) and the underrated stoner comedy Smiley Face (2007). I am sad to announce that Kaboom is not nearly as big as a movie like Mysterious Skin, and for me at least not nearly as fun as the smiley.
