Making Music with Recycled Lager Cans

Red Stripe Lager is proud to present a new series of videos called “Make Something from Nothing.” The first video centres on sound artist Yuri Suzuki and his beer can sound system.

Inspired by the DIY Jamaican sound systems that many reggae artists in that country have created, Suzuki designed and built a 2.5 meter tall sound system out of thousands of Red Stripe Lager beer cans. This system required tying the cans to piece of wood that were they attached to each other. Each can was wired with a speaker, while some cans have small funnels attached to increase the sound range.

DJ Al Fingers and singer and songwriter Gappy Ranks were the artists testing the system. These expert musicians marvelled at the sound system and quickly hooked up their equipment, including drum machines and synthesizers. Gappy took up the microphone, which was made out of a Red Stripe Lager can.

They improvised their own reggae and dub step influenced music for several minutes. Satisfied with the results, they approved of the system. The system was then unveiled at the the Village Underground. Professional artists used the system for several hours. These artists included musicians as diverse as Ben UFO and MC Chunky. The sound system was a great success.

Suzuki’s impressive piece of modern art is a great first step in this video and recycling series. Red Stripe Lager is excited about the potential for future products. Stay tuned to this channel for more videos that will highlight artists as creative and successful as Suzuki and his team of artists and engineers.
